WACO, Texas (AP) - A pastor performing a baptism was electrocuted inside his church after grabbing a microphone while partially submerged, a church employee said.
The Rev. Kyle Lake, 33, was standing in water in a baptistery at University Baptist Church when he was electrocuted Sunday morning, said Jamie Dudley, a church business administrator and wife of another pastor there.
The water in a baptistery usually reaches above the waist, said Byron Weathersbee, interim university chaplain at Baylor University.
Lake was stepping into the baptistery when he reached out to adjust a nearby microphone, which produced an electric shock, said Ben Dudley, the church's community pastor.
Doctors in the congregation rushed to help Lake, who had collapsed, Ben Dudley said. Lake was taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where nursing supervisor Pat Mahl said he was pronounced dead.
The woman Lake was baptizing apparently had not stepped into the water, Ben Dudley said. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was not seriously injured, he said.
Pastors at University Baptist Church routinely use a microphone during baptisms, Jamie Dudley said.
“He was grabbing the microphone so everyone could hear,” she said. “It's the only way you can be loud enough.”
About 800 people attended the morning service, which was larger than normal because it was homecoming weekend at nearby Baylor University, she said.
“At first, there was definitely confusion just because everyone was trying to figure out what was going on,” Ben Dudley said in a story in Monday's Waco Tribune-Herald. “Everyone just immediately started praying.”
Lake, who had a wife and three children, had been at the church for nine years, the last seven as pastor, she said.
At a remembrance attended by about 1,000 people Sunday night at First Baptist Church, Ben Dudley told the UBC congregation that they would move forward as a church.
“I don't know how, when, why, where or what's going to happen, but we will continue as a church in the community because that is what Kyle would have wanted,” he said.

I lost all hope in the future of humanity today, all because of one little comment called from a girl behind me as I walked back to my dorm.
“Hey, it went good!”
Apparently, our generation has lost its grasp on simple sixth grade English. Now, I don’t expect everyone to remember everything they learned in sixth grade. It’s okay if you don’t remember how to diagram a sentence. I can’t remember how to calculate the area of a circle.
I can, however, remember the difference between an adverb and an adjective. An adjective modifies nouns. An adverb modifies verbs. “Good” is an adjective and “well” is an adverb.
So, if you’re speaking of your chicken dinner, you say it was good. “The chicken was good.”
If you refer to how it was cooked, you say well. “The chicken was cooked well.”
Every time I hear these two poor words mangled, I cringe and images of back-wood hicks pop in my mind. “Hey! You shore shootin’ good now, Billy! Purty soon you’ll catch a big ‘ole skunk, then Ma can cook it up good fer dinner!”
So, for the love of everything good in this world, and to sound like an educated human being, please, try to speak well.

there's so many things and thoughts roiling around in my brain right now that i'm having trouble sorting through them and figuring it out. it's like my thoughts have been knotted up like a ball of yarn and the more i pick at them trying to unravel them the more i fray them so that there's less to make sense of.
things can't ever be simple. never. things can't ever just be easy to think through and understand.
to people on the outside pat answers may seem like the best thing to say or the easy solution, but they don't seem to understand that there's much more at stake here than just myself. it won't be best for everyone involved because they don't know the entirety of the situation or the personalities involved.
and the more people try to talk to me about things the angrier i get. i don't want to hear what they have to say because it's either pat answers or angry comments. but i'm not angry. and i don't want to hear the things you say and think in anger. i don't want your advice because you're too upset to think clearly right now. so please just lay off the advice, lay off the angry comments, and lay off the pat answers. i don't want to talk about it because i haven't even been able to think about it. i'm hardly able to even pray about it because i'm so confused right now. there are no words but "Abba, Jesus, Jehovah, please."

wow, past week has been great. where to start?

wednesday - busy with homework, taking pictures, had dinner with the family then headed over to the rave (NICE new theater in chatt.) since it was revenge of the sith and all i had to modify my costume and go sith. this translated to black pants, gothic boots, black scarf instead of the white dickey, and dark makeup with black nail polish. it looked decent. well my fan force got the magic green wristbands which meant i didn't need to stand in line so i milled around with friends, talked to people in line, posed for photos (couldn't walk anywhere without being asked for a photo if you were in costume.) helped choreograph lightsaber duels with a friend. then... the doors opened and the chattooine group was let in first. i didn't get tickets in time and had to watch it in the theater my friends were not in. *sighhhhh* but i was the first one in the entire theater so i sat front and center. it was great. it was the midnight showing so it was all the hardcore fans so no cheering, no waving of lightsaber, no screaming babies. heh. everyone who was not a hardcore fan probably feared being impale on plastic lightsabers...
got home at 3:30.
slept until 1:30
class at 5:30
nope, no rave on thursday

friday - got ready to go to the rave. did some tweaking of my costume. drew a tattoo down the right side of my face, put a studded belt around my waist and hung my lightsaber on it. found a camera case to keep my cell phone in and put that on the belt as well. got a medieval bracelet/ring on the left hand, amber ring on the right pointer finger, and took a chain belt and knotted it around my neck. it looked good.
got to the rave, went in all the theaters before the movie began to duel with friends then "train" little kids to weild "lightsabers." i have NEVER had more fun. you know what it's like stalking around a theater dressed as a sith, pointed at children with curved fingers with painted black nails and whispering "come, i can feel your strength, give in to your anger and join me. together we can strike down the jedi." let me tell you, it. is. fun. i'd lay hands on their head and tell them "i can feel your strength. strong in the force are you."
we'd bring them up front and ask if they were sith or jedi. i trained the sith, sarah trained the jedi. simple lightsaber duel with padded sticks. up, up, duck, down, down, push. fun fun fun. then these two 14 year old boys started helping us. gabe dressed as a jedi and will was a sith so will became my apprentice and gabe, sarah's padawan. lots of fun doing that for 10 hours. then we watched the 10pm showing. my third time.
friday- i actually got up at 10 and got ready. did more tweaking of the outfit. bariss offee diamond tattoo across the nose and lines coming down my chin. it looked GREAT. my favorite. got stopped twice that day to be told my outfit was the best they'd seen. it got sithlier each day. got in character more too, stalking around, glaring. did the whole dueling and training for about 5 hours then i had my fill of sarah so i started just stalking around, talking to people, trying to scare little kids. made one little boy cry finally. i just walked past, glaring, didn't even look at him and i hear this sobbing. so i glance back to see him clinging to mommy and she was trying to calm him down, couldn't figure out what was wrong. hahahah... i mean, oops. so john and rusty and derek bowed to my greatness when they found out.
then i started to get hungry and cranky, sarah and evelyn were having a battle of the control freaks. and then justin ruined one of our duels - die already you idiot! i told you to die! fall down! how many times you i have to stab you, dickhead?!
yeah, annoying that. so rusty and i went out to eat and just hung out for awhile.
sunday, went to church, came home, went to rusty's to work on my lightsaber some more, john finally woke up and came over so we played x again last night until 3. yay! won't get to play again until wednesday but i need the break. so i'll take today and tomorrow to clean up, organize, and do homework.
and maybe watch I, II, IV, V, and VI. heh heh heh.

grarrrrrr.
went to chatt. state to register for classes. got there at 11:15 or so. i didn't leave until 1:40. why? because we were waiting in lines. i was in one line (just one line!) for an hour and a half! talk about crowded...

anyway, turns out the class starts tonight. which means i can't go to the fan force thing. which also means i won't be able to go to game nights anymore unless they change the day or i get out early or we find another place to meet where we can stay later.

i would like to know why i'm so sad this week. i think it's partly finals, i think it's partly knowing everyone is leaving soon but i think the majority is something else i can't pinpoint. all i know is that i've been close to tears for the past two or three days. i think part of it is things i've had on my mind that i'm trying to work through. i also think it has something to do with the fact that i'm not anywhere near where i thought i would be at this point. i've basically blown this semester. i'm not expecting any A's in any classes and praying i don't get a D in one. now if i could figure out why i've let my academic life go to hell that'd be great.
but i think there's still more to it. i know there's more that's been on my mind that i don't want to go into now. i don't know. i probably shouldn't be trying to type it out since i haven't even managed to think it out yet.
